Help a neophyte with bug ID, please?

Most of you experienced gardeners out there are going to shake your heads at me, I’m sure. But I’m still working on critter recognition, and it is certainly not something I enjoy doing, so I’m not very good at it. Is this little bug on my pretty Dwarf Mussaendra an aphid? If so, what I’ve read is that I should just wash him off, right?

And kudos to my SO for that awesome pic! Check out his family and maternity portraits at

  1. That is not an aphid – aphids are small. Try looking at this site: . You might have to search through photos, but I’ll bet you can find it. He also takes nicely asked questions, but can’t answer every question he gets. Good luck!

Kim, that bug actually IS small…but that still doesn’t mean it’s an aphid! The flowers are only about 1/4″ diameter, if that helps the scale. I didn’t even think of that when I posted. Thanks for the info, Robin

  2. Robin, I didn’t realize. Sorry. Still, I think an aphid is smaller; though the orangy tint makes me wonder. I’ve seen totally green aphids and some with an orangey tint. They tend to herd together in groups, though, and their bodies tend to be fatter than long . . . . Did you try the bug site? I’m no bug expert, that’s for sure, so all I could do is browse the pictures on the site. I don’t EVEN want to go there this morning because I could spend the whole day on that site. 🙂 I know there are others here with bug knowledge, so I was hoping they’d speak up.

Let me know you dropped in!
